OHSA Training Program for Local Councils

The Local Councils’ Association together with the OHSA is offering an eight-hour Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Awareness Course, delivered in two parts. This programme combines general OHS principles with sector-specific training, focusing on legal responsibilities, hazard identification, risk assessment, and practical measures to prevent risks in the workplace. OHS Awareness – Part 1 This four-hour session introduces the core principles of occupational health and safety, including:
  • The importance and purpose of OHS
  • Promoting a positive safety culture
  • Accessing and making use of OHSA resources
  • An overview of the Health and Safety at Work Act, including the responsibilities of employers and employees
  • Understanding and developing a Health and Safety Policy
  • Procedures for reporting accidents and incidents
OHS Awareness – Part 2 The second session builds on the fundamentals covered in Part 1, applying them to practical workplace scenarios relevant to participants. Topics include:
  • Key principles of risk assessment
  • Identification of sector-specific hazards
  • Developing effective risk assessments
  • The role of worker engagement in maintaining safety
  • The importance of continuous improvement in workplace practices
This part of the course will place particular emphasis on maintenance-related activities, as well as office administration and event management. Through this course, the Association aims to support safer working environments and strengthen health and safety awareness across local councils and related sectors.
