Sharon Zammit B.Com (Hons) Accty. CPA & Registered Auditor
I qualified during 2000 at the University of Malta, however I started to practice accountancy and auditing since 1997 as a trainee locally. After obtaining my degree in 2000 I started to work as a full timer with an audit and accountancy practice. I worked with this practice for 7 years and there I got most of my accountancy and audit experience in accountancy, audit, taxation and other business related areas.
However, in 2007 I wished to further increase my knowledge and experience and applied to join the Quality Assurance Team within the remit of the Accountancy Board of the Ministry of Finance Economy and Investment. The QAU is the entity responsible for delivering the quality assurance service within the accountancy and auditing profession in Malta. The primary function of the QAU is that of carrying out monitoring visits to firms and preparing reports on those inspections. It regulates the accountants and auditors, is responsible to ensure that Maltese auditors are complying with all legislations and regulations and ensure that the auditors are carrying out their audits as required by law.
Once I was selected for this job I got my first training in Ireland. I visited an audit firm in Ireland and had several seminars and several team meetings with our Irish colleagues in order to be updated on the new legislations and regulations.
While I worked as a quality assurance reviewer I visited and reviewed over 80 practitioners, all of the big four firms and other mid-tier audit firms in Malta. During these visits I provided training, advice and assistance to these practitioners. Most of the practitioners had different audit methodologies and ideas. I reviewed over 200 audit files of different type of Maltese companies.
Following the 4 years working as a Quality Assurance Reviewer I decided that it was time to move on and start my own business having my own client portfolio. Althoug starting up my own business was my wish from when I was still a university student, I never had the opportunity to fulfill it. Once I learned of the opportunity being given by the Philoxenia Project I started to think about it again. I worked on my business plan and started to invest my savings to get an office to set up my own audit and accountancy services business. I now have my own office which is situated in the outskirts of Victoria having ample of parking area. The Philoxenia Project will be assisting me in this new business in order to purchase some of the required equipment. I applied for this assistance to purchase IT and other equipment. I also got assistance by the Philoxenia Project for the development of my new website being www.sharonzammit.com. Thanks to Philoxenia I can say that another dream I had came true.
I would like to thank all the team who were responsible for assistance of the Philoxenia Project especially the Local Councils’ Association who were of such great help to me throughout this project.
