Koperattiva Rurali Manikata
Koperattiva Rurali Manikata was set up by a group of residents and farmers from the Manikata area in August 2007. The aim of the cooperative is to preserve the Rural aspect of the area, to promote typical local food, to help local farmers tap alternative sources of income and to incentivise young people to work in the agricultural industry by creating new jobs in the agro-tourism business.
To achieve some of these aims, the cooperative has developed a Rural Heritage Trail in the fields of its farmer members, where students, adults and tourists can learn about agriculture, Malta’s natural history and visit historical sites found in the area. One can also get a taste of typical Maltese food produced by the members of the cooperative while enjoying the peace and quiet and the beautiful views of Għajn Tuffieħa valley.
Besides the Rural Heritage Trail the cooperative is working on a number of other projects. These include:
The Olive Green project. The cooperative obtained sponsors from different entities and individuals to buy olive trees for the farmers in the cooperative. During the past years more than 700 trees were planted in the area, reclaiming abandoned fields and starting the production of the olive oil industry in Manikata.
The restoration of the area of ir-Razzett tal-Qasam. In March 2008 the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment signed a management agreement with Koperattiva Rurali Manikata whereby KRM Ltd. will gradually restore the area. This is surely the most ambitious project the cooperative has undertaken. A formal application for the full restoration of the dilapidated buildings on the site is being processed. The area will then be converted into a services centre for the members of the cooperative as well as for those who visit our fields, including students, families and tourists.
The restoration of the Armoury. In 2010, Koperattiva Rurali Manikata obtained a lease on one of the buildings in the Military Barracks in Għajn Tuffieħa. The aim is to restore the building and turn into an office where the cooperative can better perform its business, use it as a booking office and a shop where the farmers of the area can sell their produce directly to the general public. With funds obtained from the EU under the Philoxenia Project the cooperative has already benefitted by buying computer hardware which will eventually be installed in the office.
